I am considering buying a Honda Fit. Could some Fit owners, mechanics, dealers, etc. give me some opinions?

I am not looking at the car, because it is cute, but because it is a Honda. I am having a hard time locating a used Civic in my price range, but have found a couple of Fits. Except for the body style, they seem to have similar features. What are your experiences with reliability, safety and general user-friendliness? Thank you.
I just read the Fit’s glowing reviews on Edmunds. The site also said that the Fit model is reaching the end of it’s “lifecycle.” What does that mean?

It is a great car. If you like Hondas, then you already know most of the positives. Between the Fit and the Civic, the only thing I would add on the positive spectrum would be the versatility of A) hatchback, and B) the “magic” rear seats (go to a dealer and check them out).

On the flip side: the Fit has a harder (they call it “sportier”) suspension, and a bit more road noise (I don’t listen to radio, so I *really* hear it); the Fit has (IMO) overly aggressive brakes (my wife has gotten used to them, I have not).

As for safety, they did well in crash tests, and come standard with all-around air bags. No traction control, but I have never had a car with traction control, so I wouldn’t know the difference.

We’ve had ours for a few months, and I wouldn’t trade it for a Civic, road noise notwithstanding. The hatch/rear seat versatility makes it a no-brainer for us, we use it both for carpool and hauling. If you are a basic commuter, this may not matter.

[EDIT: I couldn't find the bit about the end of lifecycle on Edmunds, but I would take two guesses. If that is really their phrasing, then the Fit model will probably stop being produced in 2010, which seems hard to believe, since they gave it a facelift for the 2009 model, and it is a popular selling model in the US and Europe, and I would expect elswhere, too. So my second guess would be that they may have meant the 2009 model will stop being produced at the plant while they take it down to make changes for the 2010 model. But...it seems unlikely that they would use the phrase "end of lifecycle" if this is the case...]
