Has the speciation of x into ‘nylon-eating’ bacteria been observed, if so by who and where (not a creationist)?

I’m not a creationist but have the following question:

After the discovery of flavobacteria k172 (I believe) was this further observed in laboratory/controlled conditions? I have searched the internet and my results so far are unyielding, any help would be much appreciated. Who conducted this research and what facilities were used and where was it done? I am interested in the history of nylonase because it is such a strong piece of evidence (as well as other observed instances of speciation) and If any of these questions could be answered it would be of great use.

I know what observed means- I am currently in a ‘debate’ with this creationist who insists on direct evidence as oposed to indirect evidence and explaining the difference seems unconvincing to him, *sigh*

As far as I understand, microbes will break down polymers if they have any benefit of it. This kind of biodegradation happens when cellulolytic or amylolytic microorganisms cut hydrocarbon polymers to smaller units.

I myself have studied the catabolic capabilities of microorganims to split carbon nanotubes but did not found anything. I think that the reason in this case (as in the case of real nylon polymers) is very simple: microbes cannot have any benefit for their energy metabolism or they cannot achieve any kind of smaller fragment which they coud use in their anabolic metabolisms.

Smaller by-product units may be another question, but long chains of synthetic polymers without any groups to be used in microbial metabolism…I think that nylon itself will not be a target of biodegradation.
