How do I keep the horses from trampling a round bale without a hay ring?

Does anyone else have this problem? I do not have a hay ring so the horses end up wasting more of the round bale then they eat. Short of buying a hay ring is there another solution? I’ve considered fashioning one out of 2×4′s, has anyone else ever made something like this and how did it work?

You can try tarping over a portion of the round-bale. That works a little bit. But our LOVE to roll on the bale/stomp on it whatever. Guess that’s where “rolling in the hay” comes from LOL. Be careful the round bale feeder though. I have known of a few cases where horses got caught up in one with very serious injuries.
