I recently purchased an old “hand crank” phone. Anyone know how hand crank phones worked?

Can anyone tell me about old hand crank phones and how they worked? Where they strictly in hotels or common in households also. If someone asks me about this phone, I want to sound intelligent!! Thank you!

Those old telephones were common in homes. They worked by long and short rings. You turned the crank the number of rings you wanted….say 2 long rings and 1 short ring. People were given rings not numbers. When you called someone every ones phone rang and you answered if it was your ring. You could also hear who was using the phone when you picked up the ear piece. A lot of nosy people liked to listen in to your conversation….but you could hear them pick up and knew to change the subject if you were gossiping. LOL
If you wanted central(the operator) you rang one long ring.

When you made a call you picked up the ear piece, listened to see if anyone was on the line….if not, you held down the cradle the ear piece hung on the turned the crank the number of rings you wanted…….say 3 short rings and a long ring. Then you let go of the ear cradle and listened for an answer. If no answer you rang again until someone answered.
