How can you tell the difference between diesel and regular gas?
Are there any tests? If I have a large bucket of gas in front of me, how can I find out if it’s regular gasoline or diesel?
Visually, gas usually has a more green/yellow tint. The smell is harsh more like rubbing alcohol from a short distance. Diesel is usually darker in color more toward a brown. Farm grade diesel is definitively red. (The red dye is to prevent people from using it on the roads and shows up upon inspection.) The smell of diesel is thicker and more “oily.” Upon lighting a small amount of either on fire, gasoline will take quickly and be a rapidly hot/large flame. If gas sits too long, it typically won’t light well at all because the vapors are what’s really the most flammable etc etc… Lighting diesel is a slower, less rapid burn. It is tougher to light in general but burns longer. Diesel is less “explosive.”
Anyway the best way to tell them apart is still probably smell. Wave some vapors over with your hand and get a light sniff. If you’ve gassed up a car before, you must know what the heck gas smells like. If you smell something that seems like gas or diesel, and it does not smell like gas… it’s probably diesel. Good luck!
