Why does a 1993 4 cylinder 1.9Liter engine seem to have a lot of power?

Are 4 cylinder engines becoming more powerful or are cars becoming lighter. I have a 1993 Ford Escort with a 1.9 liter engine and even though it has a small engine it seems like there is more horses under the hood than the 3.5Liter V-6 Pontiac Phoenix from 1980. Is it that the engines are fuel injected rather than carbureted or is it that engines are being designed better now than what was out in the 1970′s & 1980′s?

I think you should compare the curb weights to find an answer. Fuel injection would give better economy and some more power but not markedly more powerful. 3.5 is a big engine. Maybe it was on its last legs. The big muscle cars were from the 70′s and were all carbureted, so that’s not it.

Today, internal combustion engines in cars, trucks, motorcycles, aircraft, construction machinery and many others, most commonly use a fourstroke cycle. The four strokes refer to intake, compression, combustion (power), and exhaust strokes that occur during two crankshaft rotations per working cycle of the gasoline engine and diesel engine.
