Dairy Cattle

dairy cattle project for 4-h?
Does it hurt the cattle?
I can’t say I’m completely sure exactly what the “Dairy Cattle Project for 4-H” entails, so I can’t say with certainty if it hurts the cattle or not.
I would imagine that different regions would have different projects that they run, so perhaps some more detail would be helpful.
Common ‘controversies’ with dairy include:
1. Early seperation of Calves from mother
2. Use of the male calves (obviously only the females are kept for dairy production). Only a very limited number of the males with exceptional genetics survive to maturity. (The rest are killed and eaten young)
3. Very short lifespan of a dairy cow in general (average only survive about 3 lactations).
4. Use of BST to increase milk production in the US (at the expense of an even shorter lifespan)
I’m not against dairy by any means, but these are the ‘ethical issues’ that they face.

Dairy $113.11 A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of animal milkmostly from cows or goats, but also from buffalo, sheep, horses or camels for human consumption. Typically it is a farm (dairy farm) or section of a farm that is concerned with the production of milk, butter and cheese. Terminology differs slightly between countries. In particular, in the U.S. a dairy can also be a facility that processes, distributes and sells dairy products, or a room, building or establishment where milk is kept and butter or cheese is made. In New Zealand English a dairy means a corner convenience store, or Superetteand dairy factory is the term for what is elsewhere called a dairy. As an attributive, the word dairy refers to milkbased products, derivatives and processes, and the animals and workers involved in their production: for example dairy cattle, dairy goat. A dairy farm produces milk and a dairy factory processes it into a variety of dairy products. These establishments constitute the dairy industry, a component of the food industry Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 174 Publication Date: 2009/12/28 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.40 inches |

Objective Dairy Cattle Lameness Detection System $140.19 Bovine lameness due to hoof and leg ailments causes significant economic losses to the dairy industry and it is an important animal welfare issue of great concern. Cow lameness necessitates medical treatment, reduces milk production, affects body condition, impairs reproduction performance, and impacts animal well being. Today, early detection of hoof and leg ailments is not a reality for most farmers as they can record an incidence only at the stage when the cow is visibly crippled. This book explains the development of a novel system designated as the Reaction Force Detection (RFD) system. The system has a walkthrough layout with an initial stepup and two parallel, left and right floor plates that are each supported by four load cells. When a cow walks through the system, the ground reaction forces are recorded as a function of time. An extensive lameness study was conducted for two years and a statistical model using logistic regression was developed. This model resulted in a Lameness Index Predicting Function (LIPF) which predicts the Lameness Index (LI) of hind limbs. Currently, the RFD system is marketed globally as StepMetrix by BouMatic. The Welfare of Cattle $317.03 This book, written by the leading international research scientists in the field, is the first to cover all aspects of research into the welfare of dairy, veal and beef cattle. The book provides a thorough and critical review of the most uptodate research on the welfare of cattle, covering behaviour, nutrition and feeding, housing and management, stockmanship, and stress physiology, as well as transport and slaughter. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of the main indicators of animal welfare and covers the main threats to animal welfare in modern cattle production systems. Although the focus is largely on cattle in developed countries, this book should also be of relevance in developing countries, where issues affecting the welfare of domestic animals are beginning to be addressed. The book is intended for researchers and research students in veterinary and animal science and animal welfare science, as well as professionals in the beef and dairy industries. Sahiwal Cattle $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Sahiwal are a breed of zebu cattle, primarily used in dairy production, from the Sahiwal district of Pakistan, a dry region of Punjab which lies along the IndianPakistani border. They produce the most milk of all zebu breeds, followed by the very similar Red Sindhi and Butana breeds. They were once kept in large herds by professional herdsmen called Junglies, but with the introduction of irrigation they began to be kept in smaller numbers by the farmers of the region, who used them as draft and dairy animals. Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The aim of the present study was to focus on the fertility management and economics of subsistence dairy farms. The survey schedule was designed in collaboration with the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin Madison, USA. The survey was carried out in 171 small holding dairy farms. There were 5.4 cattle heads per farm. LactationReproduction Interaction in Dairy Buffaloes $122.67 In South Asia buffalo provides food for almost two third of the world population. Periurban dairy farms with poor institutional backup have emerged to meet the urban food demands. Postconception decline in milk yield has persuaded the farmers to avoid re breeding, resulting in genetic loss. This book report a few studies concluding that pregnancy in dairy buffalo results in a decline in milk yield at an early stage than cattle. The decline was due to nutritional deficiency, hormonal imbalance and improper management. An animal becoming pregnant, if supplemented with extra feed, would maintain the higher yield and would overcome the hormonal stress. The cost of feed supplementation was ten times less than the loss due to yield decline. The authors recommend that the postconception decline may be prevented through proper feed supplementation, instead of same scale feeding as per prevailing practice. Early postpartum breeding is recommended to prevent total losses in milk yield and to prevent genetic drain. Balanced feeding will also overcome the reproductive problems associated with hormonal imbalance. Cattle: An Informal Social History $25.92 We force them into crowded, sedentary lives. We harvest their eggs and artificially inseminate them. We fill them with hormones and antibiotics, and we feed them manufactured pellets instead of the food they were meant to eat. They are commercialized and scientized in many ways, just like us. Laurie Winn Carlsons intriguing book examines in fascinating detail the relationship between people and domesticated cattle, a resource that has been vital to civilization but long ignored and neglected. She considers the impact of science, technology, and economics on cattle, and how they in turn have influenced human history. Drawing on a wide range of sources, she shows how cattle have been worshipped in some cultures and become a symbol of pastoral freedom in others; what links them to women and the family; how the beef and dairy industries developed in Europe and the New World; how butter influenced the Protestant Reformation; how the cattle cultures helped settle North America; how meat became industrialized and margarine appeared as the first plastic food; and how science today continues to transform the lives of cattle and their connection to human beings. With our problematic technology, Ms. Carlson writes, beef and milk is now a food that engages plenty of concern, conflict, and fear. We are absolutely dependent upon cattle. We just dont realize how imperative it is that we protect them from further genetic and biologic degradation. Her book is serious social history spiced with rich anecdotes and surprising historical facts. With developing concern worldwide about livestock disease, Cattle could not be more timely.
