How much would a farmer charge to cut, rake, and bale a hayfield, per acre?

A friend has asked me if I would cut, rake, and bale his hay field. I am looking at about 20 acres that I have been asked to “harvest” for him. I would be using his baler, and my tractor, mower and rake. What would be considered a fair rate, based on what other operators tend to charge farmers for this type of service?

If you are able to keep the hay for your own needs and you can use his baler, I would not charge him anything. On the other hand, if you have no livestock to feed, I think that 50 per cent of whatever he makes off the hay is due you. A bale of hay goes for around $3.00 or more, now, since the price of gas and diesel has gone up. So, figure out how many bales he’s getting and charge him accordingly.
